When Darren Pogoda and Jan Derevjanik bought their Martha’s Road house in 2014, they were drawn by the modernist design, the location at the top of a hill, and the neighborhood’s “rich sense of history and purpose,” they say. 

But with a family expanding from three to four, the couple felt the 1550-square-foot house might be a squeeze.  They called in architect Michael Cook, who drew up a striking, redwood-clad addition incorporating a new master suite and an office, adding over 800 new square feet of space that integrates seamlessly with the original house.   

The result: a home where Jan (a book designer) can run her business, with space for the kids to thrive. “The windows are at a child’s-eye level, so they can watch the world outside go by,” says Darren. “After living in a glass house, we can’t imagine wanting to live any other way.”
