the 2022 4th of july picnic

The Civic Association’s annual 4th of July picnic is always a Hollin Hills favorite – but this year’s event was one of the most spectacular ever! More than 300 Hillers – from babies to octogenarians – came to Voigt Park to celebrate, drawn by perfect weather and the return of traditions like the bike parade, pony rides, sack races, tug-of-war contests, fresh-grilled hot dogs, homemade salads and desserts – and of course the inimitable Mount Vernon Community Band!

Things got off to a rollicking start at 11:30, as a parade of decorated bikes, scooters and cars rolled down Rebecca to the park, launching an afternoon of eating, socializing, competing in terrifying bouts of Egg Toss, and more eating.

And we have winners to announce! Alex Lee took first place in the Bunny Sack Race, while Finn Deutermann came in second and Stefen Alderfer took third. Andrew Walsh and Ayrton Maffei won the 10-and-Under Egg Toss, while Johnny Pearson and Finn Koeppen won the Over-10 prize. Alicia and Reece Tucker were victorious in the Parent/Child Egg Toss, while Megan and Jeremy Kenney won the first Adults Egg Toss, and John Totaro and Steve Polo won the second.

Congrats to all the winners – and special thanks from all of us to Roxy Hoveyda and Matt Kies, the co-chairs of the Civic Association Social Committee, for putting this perfect day together! Thanks also to everyone – too many to mention – who pitched in with planning, set-up, grilling, and clean-up to make the day a success!

Many thanks to our great photographers Bob Blandford, Adrienne Cannon, Sally Collins, Jerome Gordon, Jaelith Hall-Rivera, J.G. Harrington, Roxy Hoveyda, Jeremy Kenney, Rebecca Ryburn, Eloise Singh, Alicia Tucker, Barbara Ward, and Holly Wetzel for these terrific shots!
