in memoriam: gus matson
Friends and family of Augustine “Gus” Matson gathered at the Unitarian Church on February 8 for a warm and fitting tribute to this long-time Hollin Hills resident, who sadly passed away on December 9, 2024, after a brief battle with cancer. Gus was 78 years old.
Gus had been a huge supporter of the Hollin Hills community since moving here more than twenty-five years ago. The door to the Recard Lane home he shared with his wife Barbara Liggett was always open, and Gus had served as both President and later Treasurer of the Civic Association of Hollin Hills, and as President of the Pool Committee.
In those roles, he won the respect and gratitude of the entire community, and for those fortunate enough to know him as a friend, he was a constant source of creativity, laughter and sound advice. Over a hundred people gathered for the remembrance ceremony, where his good friend Gary Koopman played the piano and many other friends and family shared how much joy Gus had brought to their lives.
Thank you, Gus — you will be dearly missed in Hollin Hills.
