a steamy but fun july 4 picnic in voigt park

Hundreds of Hillers braved the heat and humidity to gather and make merry at the Fourth of July Picnic in Voigt Park yesterday. Just like the very first celebration back in 1955 (when, believe it or not, it was even hotter at 99 degrees), there was a parade of cars and bikes, pony rides for the kids, and enough food to feed a parkful of hungry Hillers.

Voigt Park was trimmed in patriotic brilliance. The Mount Vernon Concert Band filled the air with song. There were sack races and egg tosses. Kids bounced between the park and the pool. And all enjoyed hotdogs (over 600 — a record!), drinks (a keg and a half of beer!), an ice cream or three, and sides, sides, sides as far as the eye could see.

Huge thanks to Roxy Hoveyda and Matt Kies, the CAHH social chairs who organized the event, and the dozens of volunteers who brought it off and made it so much fun for everybody. A welcome excuse to eat, drink, and be wildly competitive over the tossing of eggs together — see you all next year!

Look for a much fuller report in the next Bulletin, and in the meantime, enjoy these great photos from Michael Soluri!
