inside: eclectic modern

When journalist Stephen Brookes and international development specialist Alene McMahon bought their Martha’s Road home in 2002, they brought with them an array of artifacts from Africa and Asia, where they’d spent years living and working. But they soon began collecting vintage Scandinavian Modern furniture and midcentury art, and now live in a comfortable mishmash of rya rugs, Burmese antiques, reindeer skins, furniture by Finn Juhl, Hans Wegner and Børge Mogensen, African sculpture and modernist European ceramics, all watched over by a dreamlike landscape by Nicholas Wilton. They’ve also remodeled both bathrooms and put in a deck with a Fallingwater-inspired fountain, and recently tried their hand at a dry Japanese rock garden.
